Production Technology for other disciplines

Production Technology for other disciplines training and Production Technology course

  • The Production Technology (PT) discipline is responsible for the conceptual design and maintenance of oil & gas wells, its completion, performance and integrity over the entire life cycle. This discipline is part of the Production Engineering (PE) function such as Reservoir Engineering, Well Engineering, Surface Engineering and Production Operations. Production Technologists play a unique and vital role in the interface and co-ordination within this multidisciplinary PE function. Production technologists are involved in a wide number of processes throughout the complete lifecycle of a well. Their tasks are focused on maximising short-term production and long-term recovery from the assets.

    Details

    Duration: 3 days
    Location: To be advised

  • To understand and appreciate how and why production technologies:
    1. Execute their roles and responsibilities in E&P’s Business Process Model
    2. Design wells and their completions, including gravelpack, perforations, artificial lift systems
    3. Establish the in- and outflow performance
    4. Optimise production performance, including well intervention, stimulation, fracking
    and
    5. To understand the terminology and jargon that production technologies use such to have an equal conversation with them.

NOTE: Objectives for each day will be discussed with the participants and will be verified at closure of each day.

        a) to verify if the objectives for this day were met
        b) to determine if any adjustments need to be made to the program of the following day (if relevant)
  • Reservoir engineers, geologists, petrophysicists, production programmers, production chemists, process and facility engineers, well engineers, and any discipline who interface with production technologists but also those who want to learn more about the discipline of Production Technology.

    NOTE:

In order to achieve a “Skill” level, further practical learning through
e.g. On-the-Job training or participation in projects and/or assignments is required

  • Module 1: PT's discipline in relation to other E&P disciplines

    Description:

Overview of the role and responsibilities of the PT and their relation to the generic E&P’s Business Model.

Module 2: Design of wells: drilling, configuration and components

    Description:

Introduction to drilling practices and the design of wells.

Module 3: Flow dynamics: in- and outflow, natural and artificial flow (lift curves)

    Description:

Explanation on the physics of the in- and outflow performance of hydrocarbon fluids in the well.

    Module 4: Conceptual completion design

    Description:

Overview of completion: well – reservoir interface (sand exclusion, perforating), dual/single completion, types of tubing, packer,
    artificial lift, etc.

Module 5: Integrated business process for production operations

    Description:

Explanation of the key role that PT plays in the interface and co-ordination of the optimisation process; this is from Real Time
Operations (very short term) to Field Development Planning (long term).

    Module 6: Well intervention

    Description:

Overview of technologies and equipment during workover of wells.

    Module 7: Well integrity

    Description:

Overview of PT’s assurance activities for safely operating a well’s production.

Module 8: Stimulation: acidizing and fracking

    Description:

Overview of stimulation activities, which are designed by the PT.

    Module 9: Production chemistry

    Description:

Overview of the sources and impact of various chemical reactions that impact performance, such as scale, corrosion, wax, hydrates.

Module 10: Smart wells: innovative technologies in wells

    Description:

Overview of state of the art technologies, which are essential means both to increase ultimate recovery and reduce operating costs
and which are under the responsibility of PT.

    NOTE:

Although the course is aimed at a “Knowledge” (Understand) level, practical exercises and case studies will form an integral part of the learning process.

  • The objectives and modules of the training course “Production Technology for other disciplines” are directly linked to the Competence Assurance Programme (CAP) as developed by SOGOS Academy. Skills are selected from the SOGOS Academy skills library and these are translated into the training course curriculum. This approach ensures that each training event will demonstrable contribute to the competence of course participants.

The management framework CAP ensures competence of all employees through:

    • the use of a unique set of skills standard to the oil & gas industry
    • a common language for skills and competence
    • the use of development/job profiles for each employee
    • fit-for-purpose training targets
    • a control mechanism to measure state of competence
  • About the trainer
The trainer has a degree in Applied Physics and started his career with Shell in 1981 where he was trained as a Production Technologist. He gained experience in Shell’s operating companies of Brunei, New Zealand and in Shell’s R&D laboratory in The Netherlands. His Responsibilities involved the design and drilling of wells, the maintenance of their integrity and the optimization of producing fields. Towards 1995 he became more and more involved in organisational issues and Information Technology.

From 2005 till 2008 he was in Shell’s Smart Fields team where he was responsible for organising courses in Shell’s training centre. These courses were related to high tech innovation in production optimisation with emphasis on ‘smart’ wells. During the last few years he been given several courses on Production Technology for Other Disciplines.

    Disciplines:
    Production Engineering

    Years of experience:
    35
